Best Balatro Decks: Deck Tier List, Effects and Unlocks
BalatroBuddy is an unofficial fan site, not affiliated with LocalThunk or Playstack. Effects and unlocks are checked against Balatro 1.0.1; tiers and play tips are opinion.
Balatro has 15 decks. Each changes one rule of your run: more hands, more money, a different card mix, or a whole new scoring rule. This guide ranks them, explains how each one plays, and lists exactly how to unlock it. Every deck name links to its full page in our deck database.
Deck tier list
This is the same deck ranking shown on our deck database. We averaged 17 player tier lists collected in October 2026. The lists mix stakes and play styles, so no deck reaches S tier.
A low tier doesn't mean a deck is bad. Black Deck's extra joker slot is strong for experienced players; it ranks low because losing a hand every round punishes mistakes.
Our picks by goal
These are BalatroBuddy's opinions:
- First win: Red Deck. The extra discard makes it easier to find your hand.
- Learning to build: Blue Deck. An extra hand every round gives you room for mistakes.
- Highest scores: Plasma Deck. Balancing Chips and Mult makes chip-heavy and Mult-heavy builds both work.
- Consistency: Abandoned Deck or Checkered Deck. Fewer ranks or suits make your target hand come up more often.
- Gold Stake: see the Gold Stake guide. We lean toward Plasma, Anaglyph or Red.
Starter decks
Red Deck is unlocked from the start. The next four unlock as you discover cards in the collection. You "discover" a card the first time you see it in a run.
| Deck | Effect | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Red DeckBeginner +1 discard every round Unlocked from the start | |
![]() | Blue DeckBeginner +1 hand every round Discover 20 items | |
![]() | Yellow DeckBeginner Start with an extra $10 Discover 50 items | |
![]() | Green DeckIntermediate End of round: $2 per unused hand and $1 per unused discard, but no interest Discover 75 items | |
![]() | Black DeckIntermediate +1 joker slot, -1 hand every round Discover 100 items |
How they play:
- Red Deck: the most forgiving start. Extra discards help you dig for Flushes and pairs.
- Blue Deck: the extra hand is a free retry each round, and an unused hand still pays $1.
- Yellow Deck: $10 at the start means interest earlier and a stronger first shop. It's best if you buy an economy joker early.
- Green Deck: you get no interest, so you never need to sit on cash. Spend freely and play efficiently to collect the per-hand and per-discard payouts.
- Black Deck: six joker slots raise your ceiling, but three hands a round leaves little room for error. It's strong once you're confident.
Decks unlocked by winning with a deck
Win a run with each starter deck to unlock its partner. The win can be on any stake.
| Deck | Effect | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Magic DeckIntermediate Start with the Crystal Ball voucher and two copies of The Fool Win a run with Red Deck | |
![]() | Nebula DeckAdvanced Start with the Telescope voucher, -1 consumable slot Win a run with Blue Deck | |
![]() | Ghost DeckAdvanced Spectral cards can appear in the shop; start with a Hex card Win a run with Yellow Deck | |
![]() | Abandoned DeckExpert No face cards in the starting deck Win a run with Green Deck | |
![]() | Checkered DeckExpert Starts with 26 Spades and 26 Hearts Win a run with Black Deck |
How they play:
- Magic Deck: three consumable slots and two Fools give you early Tarot power. Good for enhancement-heavy builds.
- Nebula Deck: Telescope makes Celestial Packs always contain your main hand's Planet, so a single-hand build levels fast. The lost consumable slot hurts Tarot play.
- Ghost Deck: Spectral cards in the shop let you buy power directly: Cryptid copies a key playing card, and Ankh copies a random joker but destroys the rest, so it works best when you hold one great joker. Hex adds Polychrome to a random joker and destroys your other jokers, so use it early or on purpose.
- Abandoned Deck: a 40-card deck with no face cards makes pairs and number-card hands more common. Avoid face-card jokers like Sock and Buskin unless you add faces.
- Checkered Deck: only two suits makes Flushes very easy. It pairs well with Smeared Joker and suit jokers such as Bloodstone and Arrowhead.
Decks unlocked by winning on a stake
Win a run on the listed stake or higher, with any deck.
| Deck | Effect | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Zodiac DeckExpert Win on Red Stake | |
![]() | Painted DeckExpert +2 hand size, -1 joker slot Win on Green Stake | |
![]() | Anaglyph DeckExpert Gain a Double Tag after each Boss Blind Win on Black Stake | |
![]() | Plasma DeckMaster Chips and Mult are balanced when scoring; base blind size x2 Win on Blue Stake | |
![]() | Erratic DeckMaster All ranks and suits in the deck are randomized Win on Orange Stake |
How they play:
- Zodiac Deck: more Tarots and Planets in a bigger shop. It's comfortable, but the extra cards can crowd out jokers.
- Painted Deck: ten cards in hand makes big hands easy to find, but four joker slots cap your scoring. It's good with held-in-hand jokers like Baron.
- Anaglyph Deck: a free Double Tag after every boss. Skipping the next Small Blind turns it into two copies of that blind's Tag.
- Plasma Deck: before multiplying, your Chips and Mult are averaged, so 100 Chips x 10 Mult becomes 55 x 55. Blinds are twice as big, so you need a real engine early, but late-game scores climb fast. +Chips jokers become as useful as +Mult ones.
- Erratic Deck: a random deck can give you five of one rank or a suit-heavy start. Read your deck in the first round and build around what you got.

Questions
What is the best deck in Balatro?
There is no single best deck. Across the 17 player tier lists we averaged, Plasma Deck and Abandoned Deck rank highest, both in A tier, and no deck reaches S. Plasma is the strongest scorer once you learn it; Abandoned makes your deck more consistent.
What is the best Balatro deck for beginners?
We recommend the Red Deck for a first win, because its extra discard makes hands easier to find, and then the Blue Deck, whose extra hand gives you more room for mistakes.
What is the best deck for Gold Stake?
That's a matter of opinion. We like Plasma Deck for its scoring and Anaglyph Deck for the steady Double Tags. Red Deck is a solid pick because its extra discard cancels the discard that Blue Stake removes.
How do you unlock Plasma Deck in Balatro?
Win a run on Blue Stake or higher with any deck. Zodiac, Painted, Anaglyph and Erratic unlock the same way on Red, Green, Black and Orange Stake.
How many decks are in Balatro?
There are 15 decks. Red Deck is unlocked from the start, four unlock by discovering cards, five by winning with a starter deck, and five by winning on higher stakes.
