Effect: Earn $8 if played hand triggers the Boss Blind ability

BalatroBuddy tier: C (Our opinion)

Matador earns $8 whenever your played hand triggers the Boss Blind ability in Balatro. Uncommon, $7. How to unlock it and why Chicot ruins it.

Cost: $7

Rarity: Uncommon

Category: Economy Jokers

Unlock requirement: Defeat a Boss Blind in one hand, without using discards.

How to play Matador

Intentionally trigger boss debuffs and still win to farm $8 per boss hand; pairs with Rocket's boss based growth. Luchador can turn off an impossible boss if needed (but then Matador won't pay).

Pulls against: Chicot (disables boss blinds entirely)

Best synergies

How it works

Matador earns $8 whenever a hand you play triggers the current Boss Blind's ability, such as playing a debuffed card or breaking a boss rule. Only some bosses can trigger it, and bosses that act on their own rather than reacting to your hand never pay out. It is Uncommon, costs $7, and Blueprint and Brainstorm can copy it.

How to unlock

Defeat a Boss Blind in one hand without using any discards.

Copyable by Blueprint/Brainstorm

yes

Best combos

Burglar: Three extra hands against the boss means more chances to cash in.
Bull: Converts boss-fight money into chips.
Bootstraps: Every $5 you bank adds Mult.
To the Moon: Holding Matador money boosts your end-of-round interest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Matador work with Chicot or Luchador?

No. Those jokers disable the Boss Blind, so there is no ability left to trigger and Matador pays nothing.

Does Matador pay out on every boss?

No. It only pays when your played hand sets off the boss's ability, and several bosses never count.

How do I unlock Matador?

Beat a Boss Blind with a single hand and no discards.
